Our Practice
We are Drs. Matthew and Robynne O'Byrne, both Licensed Clinical Psychologists who have been practicing in Marin County for over 25 years. Our mission as therapists is to relieve suffering in our clients and to give our clients the tools to lead happier and more satisfying lives. We use a highly engaged approach in our practice, giving feedback when appropriate, and also listening deeply and utilizing thoughtful questions to help guide our patients to their own insights. We are both highly trained in psychodynamic theory and developmental psychology and have also done additional training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Depth Hypnosis, Mindfulness Meditation, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Couples Therapy and Family Systems Therapy.
Matthew and I are integrative in our approach in two ways: we draw from multiple theories and approaches in an effort to individualize treatment AND we believe in the relationship between the mind and the body. We utilize Mindfulness based practices in our treatment to help clients become aware of thoughts, feelings and body sensations and to learn how to manage internal states without becoming overwhelmed by them. In addition, we have also had training in Integrative Medicine for Mental Health. As we are not medical doctors we do not prescribe supplements or medications, but we understand the role of sleep, exercise and diet in mental health. We discuss these issues with our patients and make referrals to other professionals when appropriate. We are both able to make general recommendations to our patients around issues related to physical health.
Our practice is also uniquely informed by our deep understanding of child development, family dynamics and the important role that learning plays in a child’s healthy maturation. In our work with children, we integrate parenting sessions and family work when appropriate. We know that when children are suffering, parents are struggling as well. Academic struggles are often a source of distress in children and contribute to family conflict, particularly in families with a child who has attentional or learning issues. Both Matthew and I have given many talks about the important way in which learning affects self-confidence and self-esteem. We have extensive experience working with children with learning issues, as well as helping tutors work more effectively with kids. We both have worked as school counselors during our career, and we explore psycho-education with parents concerning the importance of learning in a child’s development.
